Seminar : Armenian Question and Historical Realities

Welsh-born, but brought up in Australia, Prof Jeremy Salt worked with Australian newspapers and Associated Press and United Press International in London before returning to Australia to complete an Arts degree, then an MA and a PhD in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Melbourne.

He taught in this department before leaving for Turkey, where he taught at Bosporus (Bogazici) University in Istanbul before transferring to Bilkent University in Ankara.

Until his retirement in February 2015 he taught courses on the modern Middle East and general politics within the Department of Political Science and Public Administration. During this period he returned to Australia to teach for short periods in the Department of Politics at the University of Melbourne.

His current research focuses on late Ottoman History, leading up to the World War One and focussing on the suffering of the civilian population, Muslim and Christian. His most recent book, “The Unmaking of the Middle East : A History of Western Disorder in Arab Lands” (Berkeley: University of California Press, 2008) was shortlisted (five books) as best book of the year in 2009 by the US Council on Foreign Relations.

He has published articles in such journals as Middle Eastern Studies, Journal of Palestine Studies, Current History, Muslim World, Third World Quarterly and Middle East Policy.
